Chester’s famous Rows are a medieval marvel, but they’re a nightmare for modern installations. We’ve learned to work around it. Just last month, a retail owner up on Bridge Street Row asked us to cool their shop floor without altering the external timber façade. We ended up threading flexible pipework straight up through a disused 18th‑century chimney breast. The outdoor unit sits completely out of sight on the rear flat roof, fully approved by the council. That’s the kind of job you can’t do without knowing the building’s bones.
Handbridge & Queen's Park
Over the Dee, Handbridge and Queen’s Park are a mix of Victorian townhouses and riverside flats. Beautiful spot, but tight rear access and conservation rules make every job a puzzle. We had one Victorian property where the only sensible place for the outdoor unit was a narrow courtyard you could barely swing a cat in. We used a compact condenser, lifted it over a wall with a rope and pulley (no crane, wouldn’t fit), and had it up and running by teatime. The owner said it was the quietest thing they’d ever heard. Hoole’s Victorian red‑brick terraces are solid, and I mean solid. Regular masonry bits just bounce off.
